What you will encounter as a First-Time User

If you have just recently requested web space for hosting your Web site there a some things that you will need to know.

• For students:  your website's address is http://studentwebs.colstate.edu/lastname_firstname

• For faculty and staff: your website's address is http://facstaff.colstate.edu/lastname_firstname

However, if you attempt to access your website, you will get an error similar to the following that says, "Directory Listing Denied."

In order to view pages on your site, you must either upload pages and then access them directly, or upload a "default" page. The default page is the page displayed when no page is requested.

So, when you put in your website's address (http://studentwebs.colstate.edu/lastname_firstname or  http://facstaff.colstate.edu/lastname_firstname) without putting in a page name, you are requesting the default page.

The name of the default page is server specific. On our Web server, it can be named "Default.htm", "Default.asp", "index.htm", "index.asp", "index.html", or "home.html". Therefore, to prevent the above "Directory Listing Denied" message, you need to upload a page to your site with one of these names.
